W-N/R: Government Launches Community Mining in Elembelle





The Government of Ghana has launched a community mining programme at the Elembelle district in the Western Region.

The community Mining is intended to bring a halt to illegal mining in mining communities across  the country especially in the Western-North Region.  

The launch of the community mining will provide employment for more than thirty thousand people and two hundred (200) responsible miners that were trained for two years by the government at the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT), Tarkwa.

"the licensed community mining that has been unveiled today will give job opportunities to twenty thousand people and ten thousand to traders who will sell foodstuffs at the mining center," he said.

At the launch of the programme, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Kwaku Asomah-Cheremah cautioned the miners to use the right way to mine and avoid illegal mining at the Buffer zones which will destroy our natural resources.

"The people of Elembelle should mine the land with the right machine by using the F-moving equipment, a law passed by the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, he said " they should ensure the safety of the land and natural resources."

Hon. Asomah-Cheremah also stressed that the miners should extend brotherhood by giving their fellows the opportunity to benefit from the community mining programme in the Elembelle district. 

In an interview with the Chief of Edwakpole, Nana Asafo Akrah II, the launch of the community mining programme has brought massive employment to his people and urged his people to follow the necessary protocols provided by the authorities.

At the launch of the small scale mining, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for  Elembelle, Hon. Kwasi Bonzoh said the people of Elembelle has the mandate to operate on the licensed secured land.

"After we got the secured land for the community mining, the Western Regional Minster together with myself have gone through the necessary processes and have being given the concession to operate on the land," he said.
